Spirit Awards 2013 Nominations Led by 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'Silver Linings Playbook'

'Moonrise' and 'Silver Linings' lead the pack with five nods apiece, while 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and 'Bernie' trail behind with four and two nominations respectively.

Fresh off the announcement of the 2012 Gotham Awards winners, the Film Independent Spirit Awards revealed its nominees for its 2013 edition. Leading the pack are Wes Anderson's vintage drama "Moonrise Kingdom" and David O. Russell's dramedy "Silver Linings Playbook" with five noms apiece.

Both "Moonrise" and "Silver Linings" will compete in the coveted Best Feature category alongside other highly-praised titles such as "Beasts of the Southern Wild", "Bernie" and "Keep the Lights On. They will also face against each other for Best Director and Best Screenplay awards.

Trailing behind the two titles is "Beasts" with four nominations. The critically-acclaimed dreamlike drama has its young actress Quvenzhane Wallis competing for Best Female Lead gong against the likes of Linda Cardinelli ("Return"), Emayatzy Corinealdi ("Middle of Nowhere"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings"), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Smashed").

Another film with multiple nominations is "Bernie" which grabs two nods. Aside from Best Feature, the black comedy based on true story has its leading actor Jack Black racing for Best Male Lead award alongside Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings"), John Hawkes ("The Sessions"), Matthew McConaughey ("Killer Joe"), Wendell Pierce ("Four), and Thure Lindhardt ("Keep the Lights On").

On Tuesday, November 27, Film Independent also announced that it would present its prestigious Robert Altman Award to Sean Baker-directed film "Starlet". The special honor is dedicated to the director, casting director and cast ensemble of an acclaimed film.

Nominees for the Spirit Awards are determined by its "independence" based on guidelines that include uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter and they must be made for budgets up to $20 millions. The budget limitation rule has caused P.T. Anderson's "The Master" (which cost more than $30M) getting excluded from the nominations although it has been considered as a serious Oscar contender.

The 2013 Spirit Awards will announce its winners on February 23 next year during the annual awards luncheon to take place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. The ceremony will be broadcast at 10 P.M. ET/PT on IFC.
