Mariah Carey gets the spotlight in a new "American Idol" season 12 promo. The new judge delivers a short inspirational message in the video, "I always sang, and I always wrote. It's just about having that ambition. You really can't let go of your dreams," as footage shows her in the auditions.
Carey tears up in one scene as saying, "Do not make me cry." She's also moved by another singing hopeful, praising him, "I felt every single word you sang." To another promising talent, she says, "I know people are going to love you."
Together with Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, Carey joins Randy Jackson in the judging panel of "Idol" season 12. Ryan Seacrest returns as the host of the veteran singing competition, which will premiere the new installment on January 16, 2013 on FOX.
