The 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' actor will take the lead role in 'Bates Motel', with Max Thieriot playing Norman's older brother Dylan.

AceShowbiz - Freddie Highmore has landed a key role on "Bates Motel". The English actor, who gained prominence through such films as "Finding Neverland", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The Golden Compass", is cast as the young Norman Bates in the A&E upcoming series.

The show, which will serve as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho", also gives Norman an older brother. Max Thieriot, whose feature film credits include "The Pacifier", "Chloe", "My Soul to Take" and "House at the End of the Street", will portray Dylan, who is described as a petulant and rebellious James Dean-type.

"Bates Motel" will explore "the formative years of Norman Bates' relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit." Vera Farmiga has been previously tapped to portray Mrs. Bates, who is dubbed "complicated, passionate, and compelling."

Carlton Cuse ("Lost") teams up with Kerry Ehrin ("Friday Night Lights") to executive produce the project, which has been given a series order of 10 episodes by A&E. The show is slated for a 2013 premiere.
