'The Closer' Series Finale Is Cable's No. 1 Telecast This Summer

Debuted after the Kyra Sedgwick-starring show, new series 'Major Crimes' also pulls in a large number of audience to make it cable's most-watched new series launch in 2012 so far.

AceShowbiz - "The Closer" ended with a bang. The August 13 final episode pulled in nearly 9.1 million viewers, making it cable's No. 1 series telecast for the summer-to-date. It also marked the second most-watched episode of the show, slightly behind the September 2007 midseason finale which drew 9.2 million viewers.

The series finale additionally gave a major rating boost to its spin-off "Major Crimes", which premiered right after the farewell episode. Posting 7.2 million viewers, it's dubbed cable's No. 1 series launch for the year-to-date. It tops "Dallas" which opened to 6.9 million viewers in June, and "Perception" which premiered to 5.6 million viewers in July.

In the last episode of "The Closer", Kyra Sedgwick's Brenda left the Major Crimes Division to take a job as the new chief of bureau of investigation at the DA's office. The spin-off series continues following the team with Mary McDonnell's Sharon now in charge of the division.

"Major Crimes" will return with a new episode August 20 at 9 P.M. on TNT.
