The competition for the 29th annual MTV Video Music Awards has begun with the nomination announcement. On the lead to bring home the most trophies from the upcoming ceremony are Rihanna and Drake who bag five nods each, including Video of the Year which puts them up against Katy Perry, Gotye and M.I.A.
Riri once again faces off Katy in the race for Best Female Video and Best Visual Effects kudos. They are joined by Beyonce Knowles, Nicki Minaj and Selena Gomez & The Scene in the former category, and compete with David Guetta, Linkin Park and Skrillex for the latter title. Riri gets her fifth nod through Best Pop Video nomination, with One Direction, Fun., Justin Bieber and Maroon 5 as the other contenders.
As for Drizzy, his "Take Care" clip which happens to be featuring Riri is up for Best Male Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography in addition to the coveted Video of the Year. His other collaborative video "HYFR", which features Lil Wayne, lands him a nomination in Best Hip-Hop Video category.
Katy trails behind Riri and Drizzy with a total of four nods. In addition to the Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Visual Effects nominations, she joins Drizzy, Lana Del Rey, Regina Spektor and Of Monsters and Men in the race for Best Art Direction title.
Also nabbing multiple nominations are Beyonce, Coldplay, M.I.A., Frank Ocean and Watch the Throne duo (Jay-Z and Kanye West) with three each, and Breezy, Justin as well Gotye who are up for two apiece. Meanwhile, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen, Frank Ocean, One Direction and The Wanted are named this year's Best New Artist nominees.
Fans can vote for the winners of 2012 MTV VMAs by visiting the official site. The ceremony will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 6 and aired live starting 8 P.M. ET. Alicia Keys and One Direction are tapped to perform.
