'The Shining' Prequel Possibly In the Works

Warner Bros. is said to be exploring the story before the Torrances vacationed to the Overlook.

Warner Bros. is said to be considering a prequel to the horror movie classic, "The Shining". The studio is "quietly exploring the possibility of a prequel," says a report from the L.A. Times.

It is said that the prequel will show what happened before the Torrances' family vacation to the Overlook. A WB spokeswoman says that if there is a "Shining" prequel in the works, it is "in a very early stage and not even formally in development."

There are no actors, screenwriters or directors officially attached to the project, but Larta Kalogridis and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Fischer are said to have been tapped by the studio to "craft a new take" on the film.

Kalogridis is a writer-producer who has previously worked on Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" as a writer, and served as executive producer for James Cameron's "Avatar".

The original film, released in 1980, starred Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a father who brings his wife and son to an isolated hotel for the winter. Due to an evil presence in the hotel, Torrance goes crazy and becomes violent.

The movie was based on the novel of the same title written by Stephen King. The author has been working on a sequel to the novel titled "Doctor Sleep" and is rumored to have a 2013 release.
