'Grey's Anatomy' Casts 'Friday Night Lights' Vet as Young Doctor

Gaius Charles

Gaius Charles, who played Brian Williams on the NBC sports drama, will join the ninth season of the medical series in a recurring role.

Following the departures of two series regulars in the season 8 finale, "Grey's Anatomy" has booked an actor to join the upcoming season 9. Gaius Charles has been tapped in a recurring role, but details of his role are still kept under wraps.

However, TVLine which first broke the news reports it's likely that Charles will play a young doctor who works at the Seattle Grace Hospital. The hospital recently lost two of its staffs with Lexie's (Chyler Leigh) death and Teddy (Kim Raver) being fired by Owen (Kevin McKidd).

The ninth season of "Grey's Anatomy" will air every Thursday at 9 P.M. on ABC this fall. A promo for the next installment has been debuted, highlighting the plane crash and the dramatic situation that followed it.

Charles is best known for his portrayal of Brian "Smash" Williams on NBC's sports drama series "Friday Night Lights". The 29-year-old recently guest starred on USA Network's "Necessary Roughness" and ABC's "Pan Am".
