A and E Network Picks Up 'Psycho'-Inspired 'Bates Motel' to Series

Shepherded by 'Lost' showrunner Carlton Cuse and 'Friday Night Lights' writer Kerry Ehrin, the show explores Norman Bates' relationship with his mother and what leads him to become a serial killer.

A&E Network has picked up "Bates Motel" to series without even checking out the pilot. The network decided to bypass the traditional pilot stage and ordered 10 episodes of the project, which is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho".

The project is described as "a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates' relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit." Through the show, "viewers will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first-hand how Norman helped forge the most famous serial killer of them all."

Carlton Cuse ("Lost") and Kerry Ehrin ("Friday Night Lights") will executive produce "Bates Motel". "It's a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business," so A&E's President and GM Bob DeBitetto and A&E's Exec. VP Programming Dave McKillop said in a statement. The upcoming show marks Cuse's first the first TV project since "Lost" ended its run on ABC.

Pre-production and casting for "Bates Motel" will begin immediately, as A&E eyes to launch the show in 2013.
