'Sesame Street' to Get Big Screen Treatment From 20th Century Fox

Fox has hired 'Real Steel' helmer Shawn Levy to produce the film project, and has tapped 'Sesame Street' longtime writer Joey Mazzarino to provide the script.

Following the big success of "The Muppets", a feature film related to the iconic puppet film is ready to hit the big screen as well. It has been reported that 20th Century Fox is currently developing a feature film based on classic children's TV series "Sesame Street".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has obtained the movie rights to the long-running TV show and has hired longtime "Sesame Street" scribe Joey Mazzarino as the screenwriter. No director has been attached to the project, but "Real Steel" helmer Shawn Levy is set to produce the film along with Michael Aguilar, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady.

"Sesame Street" has been adapted into the big screen for several times, including 1985's "Follow That Bird" which was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. In 1999, Columbia Pictures made "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland".

The original TV show has been airing from 1969 and has collected 138 Emmy awards. It features a combination of live-action, animation and puppetary including some of the Muppets characters. Among the famous characters from the show are Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster and Elmo.
