"Men in Black 3" successfully opens as the North American box office champion on Memorial Day weekend. Dethroning "The Avengers" from the top spot, the action comedy movie grosses $55 million in its initial week of release. Overseas, the film has collected $132 million, fueled by strong performance in Russia and Asia.
After ruling the chart for three weeks in a row, the Earth's Mightiest Heroes movie falls one position to the runner-up spot. The Marvel superhero film takes in $36.7 million, dropping 34% from last week. The star-studded pic already crossed its $500 million mark on its 23rd day of release on Saturday, beating "Avatar" which took 32 days to achieve the same milestone in 2009.
Landing on the third place is "Battleship" which rakes in $10.9 million. Dropping 58%, the Hasbro movie bags a total domestic cume of $44.3 million after two weeks playing in theaters across the United States. "The Dictator", meanwhile, secures the fourth place with $9.2 million, falling 45% from last week. The Sacha Baron Cohen-starring mockumentary grabs a total cume of $41.4 million in its second week.
Rounding up the top five is newcomer "Chernobyl Diaries". The Jesse McCartney-starring horror movie earns $7.9 million. Earning a dismal "D+" CinemaScore, the low-budgeted film performs under Warner Bros. Pictures' expectation which predicted it would gross at least $9.4 million on its debut weekend.
