Taylor Lautner will expand his career to the independent film industry. The actor, who is famously known for playing Jacob Black in the "Twilight Saga" film franchise, is finalizing a deal to star in and produce an indie pic that will be directed by "Milk" helmer Gus Van Sant.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the small-budget film project is based on a nonfiction article in The New Yorker magazine that Taylor has optioned. Further details about the project remain scarce, but sources said there will be an announcement made this week about who will write the script.

The untitled Taylor Lautner nonfiction project is expected to start filming in the first quarter of 2012. 19-year-old Taylor will serve as the producer along with his father Dan Lautner.

Although his latest performance in "Abduction" was said to be far below the expectation, Taylor has been circling several film projects post "Twilight". He was eyed to star in "Max Steel" which is based on Mattel action figure, as well as a superhero comedy film "Stretch Armstrong" which is based on a Hasbro property. He was also attached to "Incarceron", a sci-fi project for Fox 2000 Pictures.
