Breezy gets two coveted awards including Best R 'n' B Artist, Minaj receives Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for a second year in a row, and Kanye is honored with Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.
BET has just kicked off its 2011 music awards at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with live performance by Mary J. Blige. The June 26 event is hosted by Kevin Hart and has just seen Chris Brown grabbing the first award of the evening, Best Male R&B Artist.
The "Yeah 3x" singer, who leads nomination list with six nods, has bested the likes of Cee-Lo Green, Usher, Bruno Mars and Trey Songz. "All of my fans are everything to me. I do this only for them," he said upon receiving the trophy on stage. "I appreciate all the support. I know it's been a long road, so I appreciate every blessing in front of me."
After a performance by Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, YoungStars Award is announced and it goes to both children of celebrity couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. In taking home the honor, Willow Smith and Jaden Smith beat Shenell Edmonds, Keke Palmer and Diggy Simmons.
Next, Nicki Minaj is named Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. She is accompanied by her Young Money family Lil Wayne and Drake when coming to the stage. "I can't believe I won," she said, prompting audience to laugh and snicker. They seemed to disagree with her and thought she was being sarcastic because she won over less popular artists like Diamond, Cymphonique and Lola Monroe.
"No, no, no," she quickly cut them off. "Not like that... Let me tell you something, I love my team Young Money/Cash Money. This man (Weezy) right here last year when I won [Best Female Hip-Hop Artist], he was on Rikers Island. So when I said I can't believe I won, I mean that I can't believe for the first time I get to share a moment like this with the person who saw me rapping on the staircase."
Diddy-Dirty Money, which were formed for P. Diddy's 2010 album "Last Train to Paris", are honored with Best Group. They have tackled Cali Swag District, N.E.R.D, New Boyz and Travis Porter. Later in the evening, Breezy adds another award Best Collaboration, thanks to his joint single with Weezy and Busta Rhymes. The other lucky musician that night was Kanye West. The G.O.O.D Music rapper beat B.o.B, Drizzy, Weezy and Rick Ross.
Outside music field, BET presents Serena Williams with Sportswoman of the Year, and Michael Vick with Sportsman of the Year. The former beats Tamika Catchings, Candice Dupree, Maya Moore and Venus Williams, while the latter pushes aside Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Derrick Rose.
