The actor and others like Nick Cassavetes have been secretly playing high-stakes poker for years in posh hotels and Beverly Hills houses.
Tobey Maguire is one of the celebrities whose names are dragged into a bankruptcy case. The "Spider-Man" actor won a sum of money in multi-million dollar underground poker games run by an illegal gambling ring.
Hedge fun manager Bradley Ruderman is jailed for operating ponzi scheme and losing clients' money around $25M in the games. Ruderman's company is now bankrupt and the trustees are trying to dig the money where it has gone to. According to the documents obtained by Radar Online, Maguire won more than $300,000 worth of illegal funds.
The high-stakes games took place bi-weekly at posh L.A. hotels such as Four Seasons, Viper Room, Beverly Hills Hotels and the Penisula. Maguire allegedly won the sum of money in between 2007 and 2008. Under Californian law, the player in the illegal games "had no legally enforceable contractual right to receive payment, and had no right to enforce the winnings in state or federal court."
Others mentioned are director Nick Cassavetes and "Welcome Back, Kotter" star Gabe Kaplan. Meanwhile, those who reportedly had a buy-in of $100,000 include Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
