"Super 8" has made a surprising debut at box office. Paramount, which expected to take in less than $36 million, now can relax when the J.J. Abrams-directed movie lands at number one and rakes $35.5 million in its first week.
With the winning formula made of a mix of sci-fi suspense and coming-of-age drama, the mysterious "Super 8" urges "X-Men: First Class" to sit at the second spot. This mutant-themed movie drops 56.2% from last weekend's total, or obtains $24.1 million.
"The Hangover Part II" is the third at the chart with $17.7 million. A sequel to "The Hangover", in which Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha reprise their roles, still proves to be an appealing comedy with the Wolf Pack's misadventures.
"Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", in the meantime, have to slide to other slots this week. Grossing $16.5 million, the cartoon sits at the fourth place. Meanwhile, the fourth movie of the "Pirates" film franchise drops 39%, or gains $10.9 million. Another new entry this week, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer", lands at number seven with $6.1 million.
