The actor set to portray Clark Kent in 'Man of Steel' has got down on one knee to ask his equestrian girlfriend Ellen Whitaker's hand in marriage during a trip to Hollywood.

AceShowbiz - Henry Cavill is officially off the market. Representative has just confirmed to People magazine that the British actor, who lands the prominent role of Clark Kent/Superman in "Man of Steel", is engaged to Ellen Whitaker, a British athlete in training to make the British showjumping team for the 2012 Olympics.

Breaking the engagement news in the first place was the Belfast Telegraph. The publication reported that Henry, who turns 28 on Thursday, May 5, got down on one knee when he and Ellen were on a trip to Hollywood. It was said that before he popped the question, the actor called his girlfriend's father, Stephen, to ask his permission.

On Ellen's reaction to Henry's proposal, the equestrian athlete herself said as quoted by the Belfast Telegraph, "I couldn't believe it when he asked me to marry him." She added, "I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy."

Henry is famous for his portrayal of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, on Showtime's "The Tudors". Aside from the Superman project, he is also set to star opposite Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver in "The Cold Day of Light". He will also be seen portraying Theseus in epic drama "Immortals".
