AceShowbiz - TV on the Radio have brought up one tragic news for their fans. The "Staring at the Sun" rockers announced through their website that they have just lost one of their band mates. On Wednesday, April 20, their 34-year-old bassist, Gerard Smith, lost his battle with lung cancer.

In a statement they posted on their website, the rock band wrote, "We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and band mate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly." Along with the statement, they also announced cancellation on a number of upcoming gigs.

Gerard joined the band full time since 2005. He contributed to the band's acclaimed third album "Return to Cookie Mountain" and fourth effort "Dear Science". Back in March, it was revealed through the band's website that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

"Gerard has been undergoing treatment and will be unable to participate in the upcoming tour," read the statement from the band at the time. "[He] is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family."
