It's Official, Rooney Mara Lands 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Lead Role

Through a press release, Sony Pictures Entertainment has also confirmed that Daniel Craig has been cast as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

AceShowbiz - Rooney Mara has shut down the chance of other girls who eyed a lead role in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)". On Monday, August 16, Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially announced that the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" star has been cast to portray Lisbeth Salander in the American version of a Swedish film with the same title.

Mara was previously said among the latest short list which was narrowed down to four earlier this month. Those who reportedly were still up for the sought role included Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and Lea Seydoux. The likes of Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska and Emily Browning were also rumored among the contenders, but they had been passed earlier.

Along with Mara's casting, Sony Pictures has also confirmed report that Daniel Craig joins the upcoming drama thriller. The depicter of James Bond in "Casino Royale" will be seen playing Mikael Blomkvist, the investigative journalist and part owner of the magazine Millennium.

Shooting for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is planned to begin September in Sweden for worldwide release December 21, 2011. David Fincher will serve behind the lens while the script is written by Steve Zaillian.

Based on "The Millennium Trilogy" novels by Stieg Larsson, the movie will follow ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist who are employed to find missing girl Harriet Vanger by her uncle.
