First Official Picture and Plot Details of 'The Smurfs' Emerge

The photo captures some of the blue creatures, Grouchy, Papa and Clumsy, in Big Apple, while the plot details share how they arrive in the big city.

Columbia Pictures has unleashed the first still from "The Smurfs", revealing how some of the diminutive blue characters will be seen in the feature film. Debuted by USA Today, the official photo gives a look Grouchy, Papa and Clumsy with the background of a sky scrapper in New York City. The first trailer for the movie, meanwhile, will come out via Yahoo on Thursday, June 17.

According to USA Today, the movie will open with scenes in which Gargamel discovers the Smurfs' magical village and scatters them into the woods. Director Raja Gosnell then reveals, "Unfortunately, Clumsy goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow. Because it's a blue moon, there's a magical portal that transports them to Central Park."

The Smurfs' effort to return home becomes more complicated as Gargamel pursues them. Later, Grouchy, Papa and Clumsy, along with Smurfette, Brainy as well as new character the brave-to-a-fault Gutsy, take refuge with a husband and a wife.

In this new take of the famous cartoon, the filmmakers decide not to describe Gargamel as someone who wants to eat the Smurfs. In the other hand, the villainous character only wants to capture the Smurfs to serve as charms, whose mystical essence will make his inept magic more powerful and dangerous.

Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara and Tim Gunn are cast to play live-action characters, with Hank Azaria portraying Gargamel. Meanwhile, providing their voices for the animated characters are Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters, George Lopez and Alan Cumming. This 3-D animation is slated to arrive in the U.S. on August 3, 2011.
