'Vampire Diaries' and 'Melrose Place' Survive the Ax

However, only one of the two shows receives a full-season pick up which extends it beyond this year.

"The Vampire Diaries" and "Melrose Place" are given more episodes order, but only one gets a full-season pick up. While it's obvious that "Vampire" stands out among the new shows by The CW this Fall, it is questionable why the network chooses to extend the poorly-rated "Melrose".

"Vampire", which is strong in the women 18-34 demographic has been CW's pride in the Thursday nights slot. With its DVR playback added to the numbers, "Vampire" has the average of 4.5 million viewers and consequently becomes the network's most-watched show this season. The nine back episodes order brings a total of 22 episodes.

Meanwhile, "Melrose" is averaging at 2 million viewers and is only given a five episodes order which brings a total of 18 episodes. Struggling to crank up the rating, the show has nabbed a guest starring appearance from the original star Heather Locklear on November 17 episode called "Cahuenga".

Two of three new shows debuted this Fall, "Vampire Diaries" and "Melrose Place" have beaten "The Beautiful Life: TBL" in terms of longevity. "TBL" which was starring Mischa Barton was canceled after only airing two episodes. It was averaging below 2 million mark with the 0.2 million drop from the first to second episode.
