Fresh '2012' Images Focus on the Characters
Movie

John Cusack running away from the geo-thermal collapse of Earth and Amanda Peet holding hands with her two kids in a runway are among the new photos of Roland Emmerich's post-apocalyptic sci-fi.

AceShowbiz - Columbia Pictures has released a series of new images for their upcoming post-apocalyptic sci-fi "2012 (2009)" through USA Today. Most of the fresh photos center on the fight of survival done by Jackson Curtis, his ex-wife Kate and their two young kids when the Earth is hit with global cataclysm.

One of the pictures exposes Jackson who is portrayed by John Cusack outrunning a fireball in his attempt to catch up with a speeding plane from which Amanda Peet's Kate holds out her hand. Another one sees Los Angeles caving in right after the small plane that carries Jackson and his family is airborne.

In an article accompanying the photos, USA Today made notes that "2012" will be director/producer/writer Roland Emmerich's last disaster movie. "This is the biggest movie I've done so far," the 53-year-old filmmaker shared. "I said to myself that I'll do one more disaster movie, but it has to end all disaster movies. So I packed everything in."

He then revealed that he has planned to retire from the genre years ago, but was tempted to do another collaboration with frequent co-screenwriter Harald Kloser. "Look, after The Day After Tomorrow, I said, 'I will never do a disaster movie again,' " he fessed up. "Officially? Never say never. But honest to God, I was fighting Harald. 'You have to do this!' he said. And then I said, 'OK, let's do it, but let's do it right this time.' "

Mixing the closing in of Mayan calendar with natural disasters, "2012" presents an epic adventure about a global cataclysm leading to the end of the world. Despite its end-of-the-world tone, this disaster movie will focus more on the heroic struggle of the survivors. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt and Woody Harrelson in addition to John Cusack and Amanda Peet.

Before this apocalyptic film opens wide in theaters November 11, Sony Pictures will hold a panel for it at San Diego Comic Con 2009. The panel will be attended by Roland Emmerich and is scheduled to take place at Hall H from 02:45 P.M. - 03:45 P.M. on Saturday, July 25.
