"Footloose", the remake of the 1984 dancing movie starring Kevin Bacon, has got its U.S. release date. Contrary to the original movie which was released in winter 1984, Exhibitor Relations broke the news that this re-imagining of the hit musical movie will be hitting the big screen in summer.
On Tuesday, May 12, the box-office tracking firm wrote that Paramount Pictures eyes to release it in U.S. theaters on June 18, 2010. The summer date placed "Footloose" to be in competition with Disney/Pixar's long-awaited "Toy Story 3". The release date announcement came in even before any actors are attached to this Kenny Ortega-directed project.
Initially, "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" heartthrob Zac Efron was set to star as leading man Ren. But, he dropped out a couple months back in his effort to break away from typecasting. Soon after Efron's exit, "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford was linked to the role, but there is yet confirmation on the matter.
Beside those two actors, Derek Hough of "Dancing with the Stars" has been reported to be in talks for a role. His sister Julianne Hough is also said to be a leading candidate, while "Heroes" starlet Hayden Panettiere is claimed to have auditioned for the role of Ariel Moore. None of the speculations have been confirmed though.
A remake to the 1984 film of the same name, "Footloose", has been set to be directed by Kenny Ortega, the helmer of Disney's "High School Musical" series. It is expected to start its principal photography in Atlanta sometime this spring with a budget over $20 million. Words are, this movie will feature new songs that will complement some of the memorable original tunes from the first film.

I'm not being funny but I am a massive "Footloose" fan who really can not see how a re-make will work. The people that they are mentioning are all great in their own right (loving Dancing with the Stars - you go Derek!) however the beauty of Footloose is that no one really looks professional, we didn't know them as anything other than actors and so it was all the more believable and all the more fun to watch them come together and dance. High School Musical Director - are you trying to kill me? Who do you want to attract to watch this? I love 80s movies and will be the first to admit that Footloose has a special place in my heart and therefore would love to see a re-make of it. However, this isn't exciting me but worrying me. Efron is too young, looks too young, is assoicated with being young and the young & too pretty (who can see him kicking butt or teaching someone bigger and badder than him how to lead??) Julieanne from Dancing with the Stars (does Ariel really dance in the film??)The 80s may have been the time that fashion forgot but it also was the time when everything was OK. The 80s individuality & originality and that is what makes films like Footloose so great and timeless, and that is something you can not re-create. Footloose, Fame, Flashdance are all prefect snaps from a time that was all about being different & yourself beautifully but at the same time. 2010 needs to find its own definition the 80s sure isn't it.
