Soon after news on the rejection of 's adoption request by a Malawian court was made public, the pop superstar's estranged husband Guy Ritchie issued a public statement, saying he is "saddened that her application has been rejected." Beside offering sympathy, Guy also praised Madonna for being a caring mother for her children and wished her luck for another possible adoption.

"Madonna is a fantastic and loving mother who cares deeply about her own children, and children who may need additional help and support," said Guy of Madonna's bid to adopt 3-year-old Malawian orphan, Chifundo "Mercy" James. "She is motivated only by being a caring parent who seeks to share some of the advantages and opportunities that her life has given her."

"I fully supported Madonna in her decision to apply for this adoption, and I am saddened that her application has been rejected," the movie director continued. "This time it did not work out, but there will be other opportunities and I wish her well in them," Guy concluded, adding, "She is a great mum."

Madonna's request to legally adopt Chifundo "Mercy" James has been turned down by a Malawian court earlier Friday, April 3. Judge Esme Chombo who finalized the ruling cited technicality reason for the rejection. The judge said Madonna failed to fulfill one requirement in order to have her adoption bid finalized that is a would-be parent must live in the country 18 to 24 months ahead of time.

Madonna's lawyer Alan Chinula has confirmed that a "notice of appeal [with the Supreme Court]" on instructions from the singer has been filed. However, no date has been set for the appeal yet.
