'I'm super excited to host the movie awards,' 'Saturday Night Live' star Andy Samberg speaks of his designation as the host for the 18th annual MTV Movie Awards held on May 31.

AceShowbiz - MTV has announced its pick for the hosting job at the 18th annual MTV Movie Awards. Through a press release outed Monday, March 16, it was unveiled that "Saturday Night Live" funny man, Andy Samberg, has been tapped to MC the awards ceremony held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

"Andy's connection with the MTV audience is so strong...it's electric," Stephen Friedman, General Manager of MTV, explained on the choosing of Samberg as the host. "The Lonely Island's digi-shorts are genius. We can't wait to see what subversive take he'll have on our audience's favorite movies of the year. We, like Andy's many fans, are thrilled he's decided to grace MTV with his unique talent."

In a press release, Samberg himself has been quoted commenting for his first hosting role for the awards show. "I'm super excited to host the movie awards," he said. "I grew up watching the show and a lot of the past hosts are heroes of mine. Plus my friends and I were writers for the show prior to working at SNL, so it will be a sweet and satisfying homecoming. I can't wait to act really important."

With this designation, Andy Samberg will be joining the ranks of past hosts, including Ben Stiller, Jimmy Fallon, Mike Myers and Justin Timberlake. Aside from his MTV Movie Awards gig, the comedian who made his feature debut in "Hot Rod" will be seen in "I Love You, Man", and will lend his vocal in animated film "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs".

Winners of the 2009 MTV Movie Awards will be announced live on Sunday, May 31 with Mark Burnett and Audrey Morrissey serving as its executive producers. The nominees will be unraveled sometime in the spring, while the official site of the 18th annual MTV Movie Awards was launched on March 16.
