14-times Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps has issued a public apology soon after a picture of him smoking marijuana from a cannabis pipe was published in Britain's News of the World on late Saturday, January 31. Acknowledging the authenticity of the pic, he says he is sorry for the conduct and promises fans and public that he would not do that anymore in the future.

The pic is claimed to have been taken on November 6, 2008 while Phelps was visiting his alleged girlfriend Jordan Matthews, who is a student at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia, at a house party. "Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night," News of the World's source recounts.

"You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do," the publication quotes its source as claiming. "He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place."

However, "he was right back at it at Pavlov's bar" the following night and "like the night before he was holding court, throwing back shots two at a time and pouring drinks to every cute girl," the source tells News of the World.

And wasting no time to clear the air up, Phelps issues a statement to the Associated Press saying, "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

As of press time, there has yet record of the effect that the marijuana-smoking pic has on Phelps' swimming career.

Let's get something straight. Michael is not alone. I know :doctors, lawyers, bankers, athletes, and even scientist who have smoked weed at least once in their lives. All of them are successful hardworking taxpayers who have chosen to break the law. A stupid law spearheaded by Dupont Paint! Bet you didn't know that. Marijuana was never considered dangerous before it was learned that hemp could replace every paper and paint product at a much cheaper costs, and on a much quicker time table. It takes 10 years to replace the trees that paper products. It takes 3 months to do it with Hemp....so Dupont began lobbying...he even funded "refer madness", and a serious amount of dollar driven hype. This is seriously why marijuana is illegal.

Legalize it and this wouldn't be news. It is no worse than alchol or cigarettes. In the picture you don't even see any smoke. Maybe he didn't "inhale".

You pot smoking people that stick up for doing drugs really don't hold your argument well.. Learn to spell and use simple English and maybe more people would take you more seriously. You are proof that smoking pot kills your lungs and slows your retainment of new information.

drugs mess you up, and in his case, he is representing the us and is the greatest swimmer in history! it's wrong to trash his body and a lot of children look up to him too.

So what ? Who that is famous hasn't been caught doing something illegal? Give the man a break. No one will remember it in 10 months anyway. I mean who hasn't smoked pot and took pictures? Geez people. Watch your own bloody kids and quit worrying about grown men.

Why do we care about this? Why is this news? Leave the boy alone, he obviously is a great kid who hasn't let himself go to pot!

Um, no, not 'everyone does it' or has done it. If you win Olympic gold (which he couldn't have if he was toking prior to competitions--and not because weed is 'hard on your lungs'), then you should quickly learn to do certain things at home, with the blinds drawn (and maybe with the exhaust fan on), since whatever you do among other people will likely be a public event.

Give him a ******g break. He is a national hero, a decent guy, straight forward and honest. Get off his back and thanks to Ashton.

It may dull your senses but i'd bet less lazy stoners go out for a drive then stupid drunks. And as far as Phelps goes...who cares, the guys accomplished more than most of us could ever hope to in a life time and hes only 23. Btw if they'd just legalize it already it wouldnt be a problem!!!

SO disappointing that he turns out to be a big LOSER after all!

Spoken like true potheads! Make an example of him or you'll have 'kids' out there throwing their futures away to be like him! It is illegal, and no it should NOT be legal! It dulls your senses and then idiots like you go out and operate cars and machinery and that gets innocent people killed!

Everybody does it or has done it sometime. Leave him alone, he trained hard he is an awesome athlete. Go to big colleges and take a poll of how many athletes are hitting the bong! Tons!

Everyone knows that smoking pot is hard on the lungs, so you can be pretty sure that this is not an on going thing for him. He couldn't be the great athlete that he is if he was smoking pot and drinking to the point where it was a problem. Let the 23 year old be just that a 23 year old. Cudos to Ashton Kutcher, where were your kids last Friday night?
