The talk of 'Gossip Girl' spin-off is coming to life with the announcement of a prequel that takes focus on Lily Rhoades.

AceShowbiz - The spreading news about a "Gossip Girl" spin-off last year come to a fruition with the announcement of a prequel. Instead of yanking one character to focus more on his or her story, the show's writers, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, decide to throw back the time to 1980s Los Angeles where Lily Rhoades aka Lily van der Woodsen, lives her teenage life.

On the reason why they don't pick the existing character and do it in the same town set, Savage explained to The Hollywood Reporter, "We didn't want to upset the chemistry of our cast - all of whom are crucial to the show. Nor did we want to dilute New York City as a character." The original series has been worked on and a backdoor pilot for the project has been ordered to be aired as a "Gossip Girl" episode of May 11.

The spin-off which is not yet titled, will center on young and wild Lily Rhodes who had a fall out with her parents and decided to move in with her never-do-well sister. Her life changes in a drastic pace, from attending prestigious and luxury school in Montecito to a public school in the Valley that she used to made fun of. She lives a double life, trying to fit in the Hollywood lifestyle and diving into the ordinary life that eventually brought her to rocker Rufus Humphrey. Their fling resulted in a secret pregnancy that they eventually gave up for adoption.

No cast has been suggested for the spin-off but if indeed the pilot stretches to a series, then different versions of the characters will co-exist in the two shows. "We are inspired by the opportunity to tell overlapping stories and introduce characters that will appear in the past and the present - and hopefully enrich both shows," Schwartz said further.
