Live-Action 'Mulan' Proposed

Live-Action 'Mulan' Proposed

The epic story about Chinese heroine Mulan, which once was adapted to big screen in a Disney animated feature, is going to have its live-action movie version made.

"Mulan" is going to meet its audiences again. This new film will be different from Disney's 1998 animated version in the sense of it will not be made as an animation movie, but rather as a live-action movie. Furthermore, it will introduce Mulan as a teenager and will add romance to Mulan's life.

Christopher Brough, head of MoviePlus Canada, clarified about the matter to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, October 13. He said, "The Disney toon version takes a 4-foot-high viewpoint, from a child's perspective. We will introduce Mulan at an older age and blend her story with a romance. Mulan is China's Joan of Arc story."

The movie has been arranged to begin its shooting in China in Spring 2009. The setting will take place in many locations, including at Hengdian, the world's largest backlot, and China Film's new suburban Beijing studio. "The new Beijing studio holds appeal because it's within an hour's drive of the Great Wall, which has its appeal when you're telling a sixth century Chinese story," Brough said.

The flick will be produced by Canada's Movie Plus with China Film Group and Xinhua Media Entertainment. The director has not been chosen yet, as it will be announced later at American Film Market in Los Angeles. The script will be written by a first-time screenwriter Iris Rey.
