Unable to Break Record, 'Indiana Jones 4' Still King of the Box Office
Movie

Though debuting atop the weekend box office by collecting $126 million, the fourth installment of the daring adventurer is unable to break 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End' last year record.

AceShowbiz - Nineteen years after he dominates the 1989's weekend box office with his adventure to find the Holy Grail in "The Last Crusade", Indiana Jones comes back digging more gold at the revenue tracker chart with the release of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". The fourth movie about the whip-cracking archaeologist opened strong on Thursday, May 22 and continued to excavate treasure over the three-days weekend making it the best selling movie this weekend that ended on May 25.

Debuting firm with an estimated $126 million after four days of screening in 4,260 North American theaters, "Crystal Skull" collected a respective $25 million from its Thursday opening and approximately $101 million over the three-days weekend making it the best grossing film of the year 2008 so far. The action adventure movie from Paramount Pictures is further expected to rake in another $25 million on Monday, May 26 to complete its Memorial Day weekend box office counting with a total of about $151 million.

Despite the seemingly great sales received though, the Steven Spielberg-directed tidbit still shies away from breaking any record set by last year's blockbuster movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End". Though "Crystal Skull" is making about $101 million during its opening three-days weekend and is calculated to gross in total of about $151 million over the Memorial Day weekend, it could not top "Pirates" which pulled in $139.8 million on its opening weekend and earned $153 million for its five days period.

Though the film starring Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett failed to live up to Box Office Guru's estimation in collecting $165 million over the Memorial Day weekend, it seems to win the hearts of foreign market. The action movie dominates the international box office garnering about $143 million during the weekend and inks its title to become the 13th movie in film history to have collected over $100 million dollar in its overseas opening. With the estimation of $146.5 million its international sales, "Crystal Skull" is now eyeing to haul in the worldwide cume of about $297.5 million.

Far behind "Indy" at the box office chart is "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" and "Iron Man" which finished second and third respectively. With the additional estimation of about $23 million, "Prince Caspian" have collected in total $91.1 million after two weekend screenings, whereas "Iron Man" is adding another $20.1 million on its fourth week for the cume of about $252.3 million. Closing in the top five box office movies this weekend are "What Happens in Vegas..." and "Speed Racer".
