"High School Musical" star Zac Efron is in talks to play the lead in Paramount Picturesí remake of its 1984 musical flick "Footloose."

Striving to expand his big screen credits after "Hairspray" and "Seventeen", Zac Efron is reportedly engaged in talks to topline Paramount Picturesí musical feature "Footloose", which turns out to be a remake of the studioís 1984 flick directed by Herbert Ross.

Along with Efron, TV director Kenny Ortega is also in negotiations to perform double task of helming and choreographing. If deals are reached, pic therefore will extend the collaboration between the two that has been established since Disney Channel Original Moviesí hit "High School Musical."

The original, featuring Kevin Bacon in the lead role, revolved around a character named Ren McCormack, the rebellious newcomer in a town where dancing has been banned. Despite mixed critical reviews, the flick became a huge box-office hit, grossing roughly $80 million in the U.S. alone, even being regarded as a culturally iconic film with many of its songs remaining perennial favorites to this day.
