"She's just in an unfortunate situation", Lionel Richie says of his daughter Nicole Richie's DUI case.

AceShowbiz - Lionel Richie does his daddy duty, defending daughter Nicole Richie on the drink driving case that could send her to jail.

Refused to answer questions about his beloved daughter's DUI case after his performance Saturday night July 7th at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, the singer simply claimed "She's just in an unfortunate situation."

Further Lionel revealed, "She keeps apologizing to me. I told her, 'You're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing to your father at this age.'" The R&B star, moreover, added nowadays celebrities are under more scrutiny than ever before, and Nicole is no exception.

"There's just so much information out there right now MySpace, cell phones, the Internet," Lionel explained. "If we had had all that when The Commodores were around, God only knows what my mother and father would have seen."

Nicole is scheduled to go on trial Wednesday July 11th for her driving under the influence case. She was arrested Dec. 11th last year and pleaded not guilty in February to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges. But since the socialite had a prior misdemeanor DUI conviction in 2003, she is facing a sentence of 90 days to a year in jail, a fine between $390 and $1,000, and a suspension of driving privileges.
