Fernando Meirelles will direct a film adaptation of Jose Saramago's 1995 novel entitled "Blindness."

Nabbing a new directorial work, Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles is set to make a philosophical thriller flick entitled "Blindness" based on Portuguese Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago's 1995 novel of the same title.

An English-language film of a Brazilian/Canadian co-production, the project will go into production next summer in Meirelles' hometown, Sao Paolo, and Toronto, Canada with an estimated budget around $25 million project. Meanwhile, script is penned by Don McKellar who will also have a supporting role in the movie.

As for the premise, the film is likely to follow the basic story of the book which centers on an epidemic of blindness that spreads across an unnamed contemporary city, pushing the residents to the brink of breakdown.

Gravitated towards film features after working in independent television, Meirelles first came to vast recognition through his 2002 effort of "City of God." His latest film project is "The Constant Gardener" which has led Rachel Weisz to win an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role category earlier this year.
