Heath Ledger has turned down the chance to replace Russell Crowe in Baz Luhrmann's new $150 million untitled film epic

Heath Ledger has turned down the chance to replace Russell Crowe in Baz Luhrmann's new $150 million untitled film epic, which reportedly will be set around the Japanese bombing of Darwin, Australia, in 1942.

Concerning that matter, it is said that Crowe, who actually is slated to play Nicole Kidman's lover, has demanded script approval before signing on for the film. And while the actor does so, the film's producers reportedly told Luhrmann to find another actor who soon then met with Ledger several times.

A source tells the New York Post, "Baz liked him and offered him the movie. Then Crowe came back to Luhrmann and said he'd forgo the script approval and wanted to do the film, but they told him it was too late--to buzz off."

Unfortunately, Ledger decided to passed on Luhrmann's project in favor of another big budget movie, leaving the director stranded without a leading man.
