Sofia Coppola faced refusal from Alain Delon when intended to cast him in her "Marie Antoinette"

Refusal is bitter, but that does not mean that it will stop one's determination to produce something and that was what Sofia Coppola exactly did when making her latest biopic film, "Marie Antoinette", which encountered its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night of May 24.

The director originally intended to cast French cinema legend Alain Delon as Louis XV in the film, but much to her disappointment, the star in turn refused to join in. "I had a meeting with him and he told me he didn't want to be in the movie," so she told the newspaper Metro. "He thought it was not a good idea for an American to make a movie about a French story. Everyone's entitled to their opinion and I was not going to let him stop me from making the movie," she added.

In related news, the picture itself received loud boos during a press screening at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, provoking Coppola to make a defense on it. Insisting that the flick was always going to provoke heated debate, she simply responded, "It's better to get a reaction, it's better than a mediocre response."
