'Man of Steel' Stands Tall at Top of Box Office, Posts New June Record

June 17, 2013 01:41:59 GMT

©
"Man of Steel" not only lands atop the box office, but also scores new record for the highest opening in June. The Warner Bros. feature from director Zack Snyder and scribe David S. Goyer debuts to a strong $116.6 million, beating the opening of "Toy Story 3" with $110.3 million in 2010. Additionally, it outperforms 2006's "Superman Returns", which collected $84.6 million.

"Anything over $100 million means the franchise is back. The studio gave the movie the right tone for today's audiences - something dark," Jeff Bock, vice president and chief analyst of Exhibitor Relations, says to USA Today of Henry Cavill's movie. Though it captures most moviegoers' hearts (as suggested by an "A-" CinemaScore), it apparently does not go along with critics (a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes).
