Beck's win at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards last week came as a huge surprise for millions of people, including the musician himself. He has admitted that he, like everyone else, believed it was fellow nominee Beyonce Knowles who would take home the Album of the Year trophy.

Beck is actually no stranger to be nominated in the coveted category. His "Odelay" (1997) and "Midnite Vultures" (2001) were both up for the prize but ended up losing to other albums. When he found out that his 2014 set "Morning Phase" was nominated for the title again, he thought it would join those two records.

"It would be a surprise with this record, honestly," Beck told Billboard during a pre-Grammys party one day before the ceremony took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night, February 8.

"I think it's just, the moment in music, you know what I mean?" Beck continued. "I've been in that category before, and it's usually something that's very definitive of the time."

Beck's Album of the Year win became a bigger deal after Kanye West suddenly jumped onto the stage and almost crashed his acceptance speech before dissing the 44-year-old multi-instrumentalist, saying he needed to "respect artistry" and should've given his award to Beyonce.

In addition to the prestigious title, "Morning Phase" won the Best Rock Album at the February 8 festivity. It bested Ryan Adams' self titled LP, The Black Keys' "Turn Blue", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Hypnotic Eye" and U2's "Songs of Innocence".

During the chat with Billboard, Beck also confirmed he's working on a follow-up to his successful 2014 project. He, however, still didn't have a time frame for its release. Asked how far along the full-length was, Beck laughed and said, "The optimist says about 70 percent [finished] and the realist says about 35."
