A Potential 'Venom' Director, Gary Ross Gets Script Duty

Filmmaker Gary Ross could be getting double duties for "". According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision, the producer, director and writer of 2003's drama "" has been picked up to pen a new draft of the screenplay and is likely to end up taking the directing's seat.

This re-writing task won't be his first for the web-slinging superhero movie franchise. Back in July, the man behind "" was hired to do some re-writing for the "" script. Meanwhile, previous draft for "Venom" was written by "" scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Sony Pictures announced that the studio is moving ahead with its plan on developing "" in August, not much has come up about the project since. But, in a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, scribe Paul Wernick revealed that the spin-off to the "" franchise, is not on a stand still with two drafts are already in the hands of Sony.

"We've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward," the Emmy Award-winning screenwriter said Friday, September 25. Pressed further about when the movie will go into production, he responded, "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts."

Stan Lee May Make an Appearance in 'Venom'

Stan Lee, former president and chairman of Marvel, may make a cameo appearance in "" movie. The news has been confirmed by screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese who stated that they have already written a character for the superhero's creator.

"Oh, yeah. Stan Lee is in it," Reese told SuperheroHype when he was asked about the possibility of Lee making appearance in the "" spin-off. He added, "I feel like that's the one thing we can say. He does appear in our script, and we're very specific about where he is and why." Reese even hinted a possibility that Lee may appear in several other movies based on Marvel comics, saying "May he live forever. Let's hope he's in many movies to come."

Creator Wants Creepier Venom for 'Spider-Man' Spin-Off

Days earlier, Sony Pictures has been reported to be moving ahead with their plan on developing "" spin-off based on one of the superhero's villain, "". With that in mind, the character's creator Todd McFarlane shares what he wishes for the feature film project about the thick black-symbiote-supervillain.

Noting that Venom is generally created a monster first with a guy underneath, the comic book artist expressed his hope that the movie will present a creepier-looking villain, instead of a kid-friendly baddie. "You don't want to scare the kids, because the kids love the character," he said. "But I think you could add a little bit of a creep factor. I mean, it never bugged me to watch Frankenstein as a kid, so you could have a little bit of it, as long as you have a good story backing it up."
