John Singleton Gains Control on "Tulia"

Looks like the helming task on "Tulia" is no longer put on Carl Franklin's shoulder for another name is learned to have been picked up to carry out the chore.

According to BlackFilm.com, the man replacing Franklin is none other than acclaimed filmmaker John Singleton, widely recognized for his directorial work in "Boyz n the Hood" which scored him two Oscar nominations in 1992. A 1990 graduate of USC School of Cinema-Television, Singleton has often been lauded for his gritty helming efforts as seen in "Poetic Justice", "Higher Learning", and his most recent one, "Four Brothers."

Set to repeat the stunning onscreen collaboration between him and Halle Berry as seen before in "Monster's Ball", Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to once again play opposite the Oscar-winning actress in Lionsgate's dramatic feature "Tulia."

An adaptation of Nate Blakeslee's non-fiction book "Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas Town", the picture finds Berry as an attorney who attempts to expose a corrupt and racially motivated rash of drug convictions in the rural town. What role Thornton is assigned to portray, however, has not yet been revealed.

Lionsgate Injects Fresh Air to "Tulia"

Brushing the dust off from its long-gestating project of "Tulia", Lionsgate is bringing the flick in progress again as The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the producing names behind the movie are currently in talks to have Carl Franklin onboard as the director.

Based on Nate Blakeslee's non-fiction book "Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas Town", the picture focuses on the 1999 arrests of 46 black men in the impoverished town of Tulia, Texas. Halle Berry has already been attached to play the lead attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund investigating the case.
