Director Roman Polanski Leaves Pompeii for Good

Facing conflicts in his helming schedule, Roman Polanski has made a shocking decision to drop out his duties on "Pompeii", a dramatic thriller feature he had been attached to direct since February this year, Screen Daily reports.

The Paris-born filmmaker is learned to quit the big-budgeted project after Summit International indicated it may have to postpone the film's principal photography in Europe next summer because of concerns over a possible industry strike. The company currently is selling worldwide rights as well as looking for Polanski's replacement with producers Robert Benmussa and Alain Sarde.

Pic recently got picked up by Summit Entertainment to be distributed worldwide with RAI Cinema obtaining all Italian rights to it.

Taking what probably will be the biggest film project in his career, Roman Polanski has given agreement to make a $130 million dramatic thriller, "Pompeii", his next directorial project, bringing it to the big screen via independent financing.

Based on Robert Harris' New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, the picture will depict the days leading up to the destruction of the titular city through the eyes of a young engineer Marcus Attilius, who is assigned to repair the greatest aqueduct in the Roman Empire. Production is said to begin this summer in Italy.
