Early Winners of the 79th Annual Academy Awards
February 26, 2007 10:02:12As the most prestigious event in filmmaking is finally held, the list of Oscar honorees begins to roll out and coming early in the lineup delightfully were the crew of "Pan's Labyrinth", "Dreamgirls", "Letters from Iwo Jima", and "The Departed" with Alan Arkin taking home one prize for his appearance in "Little Miss Sunshine."
Presenting the tale of a girl who concocts an elaborate fantasy world to escape her harsh reality in 1940s Fascist Spain, "Labyrinth" successfully scooped up two prizes of Best Achievement in Makeup and Art Direction while Arkin nabbed the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, beating out the likes of Eddie Murphy, Jackie Earle Haley, Djimon Hounsou, and Mark Wahlberg.

The 79th Annual Academy Awards Contenders Announced

Though gave musical drama "Dreamgirls" eight nominations which thus made the flick the top scorer in the list, the organization surprisingly cast out the DreamWorks release from Best Picture slot, lining up "Babel", "The Departed", "Little Miss Sunshine", "The Queen", and "Letters from Iwo Jima" for the category instead.

Three U.S. Flicks Added to the 2007 Berlinale
January 16, 2007 04:01:22Keep filling up the list of titles for the Competition program, the organizers of this year's Berlin international film festival has firmly included three more U.S productions of "Bordertown", "Letters from Iwo Jima", and "The Walker" into the lineup, placing them alongside the previously announced U.S entries of "The Good Shepherd" and "The Good German."
Unlike the Gregory Nava-directed flick, however, the other two will be screened out of competition as "Iwo Jima" has already opened in North America and Japan while "The Walker" is in fact the work of Paul Schrader, the president of the Berlinale jury this year.

"Dreamgirls", "Babel", "The Departed", and "Little Miss Sunshine" scored most nominations with seven nods apiece, including that for Best Picture. Those four were joined by six other movies in the category namely "Blood Diamond", "Little Children", "Notes on a Scandal", "The Queen", "Letters From Iwo Jima", and "United 93", the latter two already snatching two film awards each.

Seemingly had the same taste with the National Board of Review, the organization delightfully picked "Letters from Iwo Jima" as the Best Picture along with "An Inconvenient Truth" as Best Documentary and Helen Mirren of "The Queen" as Best Actress. Forest Whitaker was named Best Actor, too for his portrayal in "The Last King of Scotland", only this time he had to share the honor with "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen.
