Sam Worthington in Competition With Ryan Reynolds for 'Flash Gordon'

According to circulating rumor, the 33-year-old is in competition with Ryan Reynolds to play the titular character in "Flash Gordon", a remake of 1980 sci-fi film of the same title.
"Right now it's between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground," a Hollywood insider told Hollyscoop. The insider additionally dished, "If he [Sam] gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero."

'Flash Gordon' Remake to Be Intense and Real
April 15, 2009 09:04:14During a break from shooting "The Crazies", a remake of George Romero's 1973 action drama, director Breck Eisner has shared to Arrow in the Head News about what he has in mind of the "Flash Gordon" remake. The "Sahara" helmer revealed that while his version will still be based on the comic strip, it won't be like the 1980's version.
"The thing about Flash is you've got to throw away the '80s version of it completely out of your mind," Eisner stressed. "I want it to be intense, aggressive, gritty and real. For me it's about re-inventing Flash [but] still staying true to the adventure origins of it. There is an adventurous spirit in that movie absolutely that I want to embrace."

Breck Eisner's 'Flash Gordon' Finds Scribes
August 08, 2008 03:08:36Having had "Sahara" helmer Breck Eisner attached, "Flash Gordon" is moving ahead with Alex Raymond's comic strip adaptation. In the latest report concerning the action adventure film, it is revealed that Sony Pictures have picked up screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script.
The pair of scribblers, who have worked together in writing Universal's "Dracula Year Zero" and Zack Snyder's "Cobalt 60", have been signed in a few months after Sony won the screening rights from Hearst Entertainment. They are expected to bring a new take to the outer space tale that has once been brought to the big screen in 1980 by Mike Hodges.

May 22, 2008 03:05:52After Marvel Entertainment scored big at the box office through their comic adaptation "Iron Man", it seems that many studios are competing to obtain screening rights for other comic adaptation. Following the news about the picking up of "Buck Rogers", it is reported that Sony Pictures have won the bidding war to bring "Flash Gordon" into life.
Based on the classic strip originally drawn by Alex Raymond, "Gordon" will be made into a live action movie under the direction of "Sahara" helmer Breck Eisner, who is attached to the project. The action film is about an athlete who is, together with his lover, kidnapped and transported to the planet of Mongo by a mad scientist. In the strange planet, the three encounter adventures as well as dangerous situation as they try to save Earth from destruction done by the planet's evil ruler.
