'Eastern Promises' Sequel to Be Developed
March 31, 2009 11:03:44"Eastern Promises", a 2007 crime drama film starring Viggo Mortensen, is most likely getting a sequel treatment. In a chat with MTV News, director David Cronenberg reveals that he, Mortensen, screenwriter Steven Knight, producer Paul Webster and Focus Features are planning for a follow-up movie. "We are moving forward with it," he gushes. "We all are excited about the idea of doing a sequel."
Sharing more on the sequel plan, the helmer of "A History of Violence" says, "We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be." He then continues, "I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it."

'Eastern Promises' Landed 12 Nods at 2008 Genies Awards
January 29, 2008 01:01:38The Russian mobsters' film "Eastern Promises" shared the lead position of 28th Annual Genie Awards' nominations with the Rwandan genocide's "Shake Hands With the Devil". On Monday, January 28, the two movies have been announced to be the nomination leaders as they nabbed 12 nods each from the Canada's film awards.
The two films will battle each other for the honor of Best Motion Picture contending also with "L'age Des Tenebres" (Days of Darkness), "Away From Her" and "Continental, Un Film Sans Fusil" (Continental, A Film Without Guns). The David Cronenberg's crime family drama "Promises" also has to face the Roger Spottiswoode's biopic "Devil" in the best director prize. Aside from facing "Devil", it will contest against Sarah Polley's "Away From Her", Bruce Mcdonald's "The Tracey Fragments" and Denys Arcand's "Tenebres".

Applauded Eastern Promises Highlighted 51st London Film Fest Opening
October 19, 2007 11:10:25Coming to its fiftieth-first anniversary on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, the annually-held Times BFI London Film Festival marked its opening grandly at Odeon Leicester Square with David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises", which drew a round of applause from audience for its brutal key fight scene.
The red carpet gala for the Russian mob drama found two principal cast members Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel cheerfully made their way to the screening alongside Cronenberg. Watts looked finely beautiful in a ruby and sapphire-colored Derek Lam dress plus five-inch Dorothy-red Jimmy Choo shoes while Cassel got suave by dressing completely in black.

September 17, 2007 11:09:46Despite the big buzz surrounding films with serious topics like war and corruption at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, tense, bloody Russian mob drama "Eastern Promises" turned out to be the picture that moviegoers favored most at the yearly event.
The flick, directed by Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, took top prize of Cadillac People's Choice Award on the final day of the ten-day festival, Saturday, September 15, 2007. The honor, given based on votes from the festival's audience, often is an indicator of Academy Award nominations with past recipients including Oscar's Best Picture winners "Chariots of Fire" and "American Beauty."
