Set on a housing estate on the edge of Paris, the film features a tour-de-force performance from newcomer Oulaya Amamra, who plays Dounia, a teenager hungry to get ahead in life.
It touches upon many of the traditional themes of young-adult films about second-generation kids - including drugs and religion - but turns convention on its head to deliver a fun tale about friendship.
