No 'District 9' Sequel Until the Story Is Figured Out

A follow-up to summer hit "" won't be happening in the near future due to its story. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily brought up the update, reporting that although Sony Pictures is more than willing to push forth the sequel, it will have to wait until producer Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp come up with a story.

Finke wrote in its report, "...those close to producer Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp say only it may happen 'at some point' when the duo 'figure out what the story is and organize their respective schedules'. " Jackson currently has a full plate with the J.R.R. Tolkien's adaptation, "", while Blomkamp is reportedly fielding numerous offers.

'District 9' Banned in Nigeria

"" has become one of 2009 summer hit movies, but it wasn't without any controversy. On Saturday, September 19, Nigeria's Information Minister Dora Akunyili told the BBC's Network Africa programme that the sci-fi movie is not welcomed in the country and that she had ordered the Nigerian film and video censors' board to ask all cinemas to stop showing it.

On the reason why, Akunyili explained, "We feel very bad about this because the film clearly denigrated Nigeria's image by portraying us as if we are cannibals, we are criminals." She was referring to the scene where Eugene Khumbanyiwa's main gangster character, Obesandjo, tries to cut off and eat the arm of the film's protagonist in an attempt to gain his supernatural powers, among others.

"" made a triumphant invasion of the North American theaters. Displaying an impressive run at North American box office since its opening day on Friday, August 14, the Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi thriller took over the chart's crown from last week champ, "".

Debuted to a $14.2 million worth of ticket sales on Friday, this Sony Pictures' alien-centric movie continued to garner $12.6 million on Saturday, August 15, and went on to collect $37.4 million in total by the end of Sunday, August 16. With the exceeding expectation's bow, the low-budgeted indie has already surpassed its budget costs by $7 million.

'District 9' Gets Another New Clip

A week shy of "" theatrical debut in the U.S., a clip from the sci-fi movie has come out for viewing pleasure. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly (EW), the snippet highlights on the scene which chronicles how an MNU field operative named Wikus van der Merwe contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA.

Accompanying the clip, EW included an interview with lead actor and director Neill Blomkamp as a computer graphics designer. In part of the chat, Copley confessed that Blomkamp returns Copley's favor years back when he hires Blomkamp. "I gave Neill his first job," he recalled. "And he's certainly returned the favor."

The first featurette for sci-fi movie "" has made its way out. Providing a peek to the behind-the-scene footage, the featurette also gives out many never-before-seen snippets, which feature the Wikus van der Merwe character portrayed by .

The featurette also contains parts of interviews with Copley as well as some of the crew, including director Neill Blomkamp. In the video, the filmmaker claims that the difference of this movie with other alien films is that in "District 9", the aliens who come to the Earth are homeless and their life are rough.

The first full trailer of "" has finally arrived. Debuted via Yahoo! Movies, the new promotional video gives a taste of what action sequences to be expected from the sci-fi movie. The trailer also provides a more detailed look at the story, exposing that there are a lot of secrecy around District 9 which is the place government kept the aliens.

Years ago, an extraterrestrial race made first contact with Earth, forcing human to vigilantly wait for their hostile attack using their advances in technology. But, nothing ever happens. The aliens are actually refugees. Now, they are kept in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 and forced to work for Multi-National United (MNU), a company which is utilizing alien technology.

Exposed via IMDB, the uncensored version features an unblurred shot of the alien and adds English subtitles to the alien language, revealing its plea to go home.

Taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, this sci-fi film tells the story that an extraterrestrial race, called the 'Non-Humans', is forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth. Contained in the area where they landed, they are forced to work for Multi-National United (MNU), a company which is utilizing alien technology. Throughout the movie, they'll try to let themselves loose from MNU's grasp.

Though "" remains stalled up to now, it does not mean that Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp are going their separate way. Far from it, they will join forces once again to work on together a live-action sci-fi feature titled "."

Variety reports that project thereby will be Blomkamp's feature directing debut instead of "Halo" while Jackson is learned to serve as the producer via his WingNut Films production banner. Apart from the helming duties, the former has also been assigned to pen the script with partner Terri Tatchell.

awesome movie. great story and amazing acting by Sharlto Copley. just loved him. he's a tremendous actor. he's got a great future ahead of him. can't believe it was his first movie. another masterpiece by the legendary filmmaker peter jackson.
