John Travolta Quits Dallas Movie, Replaced by Ben Stiller?
December 18, 2007 01:12:32The only remaining cast member of "Dallas" seems to have also taken his leave from the project, if tidbit by New York Post's Page Six proves legit.
The gossip column claimed that John Travolta is no longer attached to the movie after being promoted as its anchor for more than two years. According to the insiders telling Page Six, the "Grease" star reportedly has been dropped from his role as J.R. Ewing and had the part given to Ben Stiller instead.

The big screen adaptation of the long-running TV series, pic has been learned to be developed as a comedy instead of drama feature. Filming is being eyed to start January next year based on script written by Pam Brady who has been hired as replacement to Robert Harling.

According to the site, filmmakers of the picture have concluded to throw away the script written by Robert Harling after a few focus groups in the Midwest found it way too dramatic. Following this decision, the script then reportedly will be re-written as a show-within-a-show type comedy instead, similar to that of last year's "Bewitched."

Variety learned that the lineup has been scrapped with the exception of John Travolta, who is still billed as J.R. Ewing, making all plans concerning the film's production be put on hold.
With this change of direction, it is confirmed that Luke Wilson and Shirley MacLaine, who have been cast to play Bobby Ewing and Miss Ellie, respectively, are no longer included in the list. In the meantime, helmer Gurinder Chadha opts to wait for the new cast before making final decision whether she will stay in the project or not.
