Ok, so the series didn't have the happiest of endings, but anything less would have been a bit disappointing. A film is almost guarenteed to try and make it more child friendly...

posted by Shimona on Aug 24, 2010 10:46:16I saw the "official" trailer and it was nothing but images pulled from other movies. The djinni in the "official" trailer is the faun from Pan's Labyrinth. I also read the books and I thought they were amazing, so I hope they make a movie out of it.

The YOUNG boy was sold to the government by his parents so that he can be given to a family of magicians and trained as an apprentice. The master wasn't evil, he just wasn't fond of the boy. He wasn't plotting revenge against his master, he was plotting revenge against another magician Lovelace who embarraced him. Other than that I love the book :)

One of the things I see already, though, it that in the movie story it states that he is an apprentice training under an 'evil' master... that isn't true, Underwood isn't evil, a little greedy but he never really wanted an apprentice, so he's spiteful, not evil....

Perhaps footnotes should be modified and done in a voiceover as Bartimaeus' thoughts - not in a hokey way but a creative way. Underwood IS evil (but also weak), he trains a boy he knows was sold, he doesn't parent Nathaniel and barely shows him any sympathy. This makes it difficult for Nathaniel to know what is right and wrong. Helping to keep a system based on the selling of children and not protecting those children is wrong, not just weak. Although, hey should make sure Simon Lovelace is clearly an evil person. The first time I read it I imagined it as a movie. Amulet of Samarkand is so cool.
