'Transformers 2' Edges Out 'Ice Age 3' for Box Office's Top
July 07, 2009 09:07:14"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" bested over "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" at the North American box office in the end. On Monday, July 6, the action fantasy movie from director Michael Bay claimed the crown for a second consecutive weekend, breaking studio estimates on Sunday, July 5, which placed the two movies in a tie with each predicted to earn $42.5 million worth of ticket sales.
Closing the Fourth of July weekend in the first place, the "Transformers" sequel pulled ahead of the third "Ice Age" once the final figures came in. It brought in as much as $42.3 million over the three days weekend to add to the $293.4 million total cume for the North American sales only. After 12 days of release, it has also become the biggest film of the year worldwide with an overall sales that worth $593.8 million.
'Ice Age 3' and 'Transformers 2' in Tie for 1st Place at Box Office
July 06, 2009 09:07:34A tight race for the #1 spot at the North American box office between "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has been one hazy battle, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday, July 5. Collecting approximately $42.5 million each in ticket sales over the U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend, the two different genre movies left a rare tie at the chart. The final figures to be announced Monday, July 6, will settle a winner.
Since being opened in theaters Wednesday, July 1, the third "Ice Age" movie met most analysts' expectations and has earned in total about $67.5 million. Despite the tie condition, Bert Livingston of 20th Century Fox, the studio which released the "Ice Age" franchise, was happy with the result. "Given the great weather, and what a movie event Transformers is, we couldn't be happier with a tie for first," he said.
'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Rocks North American Box Office
June 29, 2009 10:06:38"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has marked the first mega-blockbuster launch of the year. Opened Wednesday, June 24 with an impressive bow of $60.6 million, the sequel of 2007 "Transformers" sold $109 million worth of tickets over the three-day weekend which begins Friday, June 26, and thus ended the week on top of the North American box office.
Over the course of five-day at the theaters, the Michael Bay-directed movie snagged approximately $200.1 million. The massive earning is enough to land "Revenge of the Fallen" a second place on the best five-day haul of all time chart, but still places it behind "The Dark Knight" with its five days bow of $203.8 million last year. Nonetheless, the score can change when the fixed tally comes in.
'The Proposal' Gets Lots of Love at North American Box Office
June 22, 2009 09:06:56Romantic comedy "The Proposal" has led North American box office. Debuted atop the revenue chart, this Anne Fletcher-directed film rang up $33.6 million over the course of the June 19 to 21 weekend and thus became the movie that ended the reign of last two weeks' champ, "The Hangover".
This comedy movie did not only surpass industry's prediction that it will open in mid-$20-million range, but also marked the best opening ever for its leading actress, Sandra Bullock. The weekend bow for "The Proposal" nearly doubled the opening cume of Bullock's previous best, "Premonition", which debuted to $17.6 million in 2007.
'The Hangover' Rocks the Box Office for the Second Time
June 15, 2009 09:06:19"The Hangover" clung onto its #1 spot at the North American box office for a second weekend. While it faced a stiff competition from Disney/Pixar's "Up", the raunchy comedy from director Todd Phillips secured the top position by hauling in an estimated $33.4 million over the three days weekend starting from June 12.
By doing so, this movie became the first film of this summer to hold onto the box office's top slot for two consecutive weeks and its added bow also brought it to be the seventh film of summer to cross the $100 million mark. Grossing around $105.4 million after only 10 days in theaters, this movie has also set a new record for an R-rated movie. It became the fastest R-rated film to overcome the milestone, beating out the old record "Sex and the City" which needed 11 days to reach $100 million.
'The Hangover' Trades Place With 'Up' at Box Office
June 09, 2009 09:06:58Contrary to the initial report, "The Hangover" has claimed the top slot at North American box office over the weekend. Estimated to have earned $43.3 million during its three days opening, the Todd Phillips-directed comedy rung up about $1.8 million more as the final figure showed a total tally of nearly $45 million.
With the higher bow, the raunchy comedy swapped places with the earlier announced weekend winner, "Up", and thus got the hold of the top slot, dethroning "Up" to the second. The flip-flop between #1 and #2 movies is a rare happening following the Sunday estimates, but "The Hangover" managed to pull that one through after strong attendance on Sunday, June 7.
'The Hangover' Beaten Down by 'Up' at the Box Office
June 08, 2009 09:06:13Though it managed to steal the #1 slot at the North American box office on Friday, June 5, "The Hangover" should settle for a runner-up position following the weekend tally. Taking in an estimated $43.3 million, the raunchy comedy came in a close second to this week's champion, Disney/Pixar's "Up".
"The Hangover" exceeded expectation and scored much greater sales than 2005's Owen Wilson-starring "Wedding Crashers" even when adjusted for ticket price inflation. "We were positioned to be a solid No. 3," Warner distribution president Dan Fellman responded to the impressive opening weekend. "The wonderful results clearly put us in an interesting place."
'Up' Soars to the Box Office's Top
June 01, 2009 11:06:46Pixar have once again dominated the North American box office, placing their latest animation "Up" at the top slot of the revenue chart. With opening bow being estimated at around $68.2 million, the family adventure film became the tenth Pixar movie to land atop the chart and maintained the studio's perfect box-office track record, scoring ten for ten.
Among Pixar movies, this Pete Docter-directed animation is the studio's third highest debut behind "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles", but still ahead of "Wall-E" which opened to $63.1 million. If the ticket price inflation is taken into consideration, however, "Up" slid to fifth place since "Toy Story 2" and "Monsters, Inc." would rate significantly higher.
'Terminator Salvation' Loses Box Office Battle to 'Night at the Museum 2'
May 25, 2009 09:05:02"Terminator Salvation" has run out of gas on the race to the top of North American box office. Though having a solid opening on Thursday, May 21, the action thriller from director McG has to admit defeat from "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian" at the weekend duel.
During the three days weekend beginning Friday, May 22, the fourth movie of the "Terminator" series dug up approximately $43.0 million. The weekend bow was around $10 million less than what "Battle of the Smithsonian" collected and fell short of the $44 million start by 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines". Still, the big number was enough to place it second on the chart.
