Winners of 2009 Evening Standard British Film Awards Announced
February 02, 2009 01:02:07Trophies of the 2009 Evening Standard British Film Awards have been handed out on Sunday, February 1. In a private dinner hosted by Standard editor Veronica Wadley, Steve McQueen's dramatisation of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands' last days, "Hunger", has been hailed as Best Film, beating out "Frost/Nixon" and "Unrelated".
While "Hunger" won the top prize, "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle and actress Kate Winslet were shunned away from the kudo they were up for. Boyle, who was named Best Director by the Directors Guild of America on Saturday, January 31, lost to "The Reader" director Stephen Daldry, and Winslet, who won two Golden Globes earlier this year for her performances in "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road" has to see the Best Actress title go to "Julia" star, Tilda Swinton.

In the movie category, Danny Boyle's "Slumdog" has dominated the field, sweeping away four prizes, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. Double winners listed are "The Wrestler" and Kate Winslet. Rounding up the wins for each TV network is HBO with 7, NBC with 3 and AMC with 1. "John Adams" in particular earns four, one notch higher than what "30 Rock" gets.

At Sardi's Restaurant in New York on Saturday, January 3, the 63-member society compiled of critics from around the country have chosen Sean Penn as the year's best actor for his portrayal of gay-rights icon Harvey Milk in "Milk" and given "Happy-Go-Lucky" the most awards.
Collecting four kudos from the 43rd National Society of Film Critics Awards, drama comedy "Happy-Go-Lucky" brought home Best Director and Best Screenplay prizes for Mike Leigh. It also nabbed Best Actress for its star Sally Hawkins and Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Marsan. For her Best Actress award, Hawkins overshadowed Melissa Leo of "Frozen River" and Michelle Williams of "Wendy and Lucy".

On Sunday, December 14 at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, the Danny Boyle-directed movie about a poor Indian boy getting a shot at winning millions in a television game show was revealed to be the winner on the coveted category, besting over "The Reader", "Revolutionary Road", "Frost/Nixon", "Milk" and "Frozen River".
Apart from taking home the top prize, the 2008 Best British Independent Film also nailed two other kudos. The first one was Best Director for Danny Boyle and the second was Best Score for A.R. Rahman. For the director prize, Boyle won over Thomas McCarthy of "The Visitor", Ron Howard of "Frost/Nixon", Gus Van Sant of "Milk", Christopher Nolan of "The Dark Knight" and Stephen Daldry of "The Reader".

At the organization's annual meeting on Sunday, December 14, "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Wall-E" have been hailed BSFC Awards' best picture. In tie for the best picture prize, both "Slumdog" and "Wall-E" collected one other prize, "Slumdog" received Best Film Editing kudo, whereas "Wall-E" was dubbed Best Animated Film.
Apart from those two movies, "Milk" has dominated the awards recipients' list with three awards. Bringing home Best Director recognition for its director Gus Van Sant, the biopic movie about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America, has nailed the Best Screenplay kudo and its leading actor Sean Penn was in tie with Mickey Rourke of "The Wrestler".
New York Film Critics Circle Hailed 'Milk' 2008 Best Film

On Wednesday, December 10, the biopic drama from director Gus Van Sant has been named the Best Picture of 2008 by the organization of film reviewers from New York-based publications.
Snagging two more kudos from the 2008 NYFCC, the movie about the gay-rights icon Harvey Milk who was tragically murdered a year after he was elected to public office brought recognitions for two of its performers, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Penn won the coveted Best Actor for his performance as Milk, while Brolin got the Best Supporting Actor prize for his portrayal of Dan White.
Los Angeles Film Critics Association Dubs 'Wall-E' Best Picture of 2008

Winning over runner-up"The Dark Knight", the Andrew Stanton-directed film has become the first ever animation movie to be given the title by the association.
In the announcement made by Lael Loewenstein, President of the LAFCA, it is also let out that Danny Boyle has been dubbed as Best Director for "Slumdog Millionaire", while Sean Penn has been hailed as Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in "Milk". Full Nominees List of 11th British Independent Film Awards
October 29, 2008 02:10:34The nominees for the eleventh annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) have been announced. On Tuesday, October 28, at Soho House in London, it is unveiled that IRA prison drama "Hunger" and crime comedy "In Bruges" have dominated the list by collecting seven nominations each.
Both of them will battle it out for the title of Best British Independent Film, contending also with "Slumdog Millionaire", "Man on Wire" and "Somers Town". They will also go head-to-head for Best Screenplay and Best Debut Director. The latter is also known as The Douglas Hickox Award.
