Heidi Newfield Biography

news-detailsLeaving her successful singing group, Trick Pony, was probably not an easy decision for Heidi Newfield, but her courage to spread wings wider had been stronger than she thought. It was eventually worth it, for not only was she able to get out of the circle as far as her creativity requires her to, but she also earned an acknowledgment as a solo artist who can write her own songs. "Johnny and June" the song that leads her debut solo album has peaked at #18 on U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and #68 on Billboard Hot 100. Her album "What Am I Waiting For" has gained even a better chart position. It entered the Hot 200 chart at #10 and #2 on Hot Country Albums.

All Heidi knew when she was a little was the fact that she liked microphone so much. Born in a farm house in Healdsburg, California on October 4, 1970, she has felt really lucky to be in the middle of a very supporting family. Heidi was introduced to the wonderful world of music at the early age of five and was constantly encouraged by her parents to explore her singing talent. She listened a lot to Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, but growing up in the late '70s also contributed in her listening to the hard rock trend coming from The Rolling Stone, AC/DC and Aerosmith. At the age of 13, she developed love for country music and frequently made a trip to Nashville to attend talent search events. "We didn't know what we were doing, and we certainly didn't have the money to be running me all over back and forth between Nashville, but they did their very best to try to support me," she recalled.

She came to a big break in 1996 when she met a woman who happened to be the wife of a musician named Keith Burns. Together with bass guitarist Ira Dean, Keith was looking for a female vocalist to form a trio that is made up of two guys and a woman. It was then that Trick Pony were born. The group, struck a major recording deal in 2000, being taken under Warner Records' wings. Together with the band, Heidi scored a success with the release of three studio albums. The self-titled debut that was released in 2001 shot to #12 on the Country Albums chart and the sophomore effort "On a Mission" peaked at one place below that. In the middle of the career ladder, she married her NFL agent boyfriend Bill Johnson in June 2004. The band released one more album in 2005 titled "R.I.D.E" that did even better on the chart by reaching #20 on Billboard Hot 200. Post touring in support of this album, Heidi felt that her time in the band had come to an end. Wrapping up the tour in 2006, Heidi announced to Trick Pony fans that she was leaving the band to pursue a solo career.

Since recording as a Trick Pony member under Asylum/Curb Records, Heidi has become acknowledged on the industry's people, one of whom she recognized as producer Tony Brown. Heidi found solace in Brown and the path to let her creative juice flows freely. "Right away we just clicked," Heidi recalled. "Right away I think he got my song sensibility, and was right on track with it. Loved that I wanted to step out from what I had been doing, kind of get out of the bar room for a minute." Her first solo album "What Am I Waiting For" was released on August 5, 2008.
