Disturbed were formed in around 1994 under the moniker Brawl with Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, Mike Wengren and Erich Awalt. When Awalt left the band shortly after they recorded a demo, David Draiman auditioned for the vacant slot and was accepted. In 1996, they officially changed their band's name to Disturbed.

Two years later, they started recorded a new demo but didn't play it in live shows. Instead, they sent it straight to record labels in hopes to get signed. After finally sealing a deal with Giant Records, they released a debut album "The Sickness" which launched them into stardom.

The illness is not thought to be permanent, but Draiman has been told he must stop performing for at least four weeks in order for him to fully heal, according to the Boston Globe.
